What does this term mean and what relevance does it have after a cancer diagnosis and treatment?

Increasing rates of chronic illness, including cancer, and the impact of this on our health system, mean that it is important, on many levels, for people to be active participants in their own health care. To become active partners people need to develop skills to make informed decisions, manage their risk factors, monitor their diseases, make effective use of services and medications, and cope with the impact of the disease on their lives.

Mary Macheras–Magias will present this session and facilitate discussion on the topic. Mary is the Coordinator, Consumer Representation and Training at Health Issues Centre. She is involved as a consumer representative in local, national and international forums, and is the Chairperson of Cancer Action Victoria.
